Since I "met" the Vigilaunties in the prequel "Friends in Need," I had been looking forward to their first full-length adventure - and Baz, Peggy, Carole (OMG, Carole!), and Madge did not disappoint. The "cozy noir" format totally works for me, and I find the Vigilaunties' (thankfully less-than-standard) approach to looking our for their family and friends very entertaining.

What a great addition to this wonderful series! I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know Elizabeth/Isobel (another strong and capable shero despite her initial predicament) and Ewan (a somewhat unexpected marshmallow in former-special-forces tough-guy guise). These two were just perfect for each other! I also loved reconnecting with the quirky tight-knit community of Glenlaig and getting to know Ewan’s pub “family” better. More, please?

I had so much fun with this book! I loved Hannah, adored Carlos, and swooned over Cal (when I wasn't rolling my eyes at him along with Hannah... :) ) - and I was delighted to see that Ophelia and Xavier played a quite important part in this story, too, heart eyes emojis and all. <3

Friends-to-lovers is one of my favorite tropes, and books like Kilt to Order are why. I adore how much Casey and Gareth care for each other, and how it shows both in small details as well as grand(er) gestures, long before they are ready to admit that they are head over heels for each other... le sigh le swoon Add to that some trademark Crowder quirkiness and meddling friends and family, and it’s another winner for me! This story was a bit of a mixed bag for me. Friends-to-more is one of my favorite tropes, so I was very much looking forward to reading this book. I enjoyed getting to know Elin and Hawk, and there were some truly sweet and / or funny moments between the two.

There were a couple of things that didn’t quite work for me, though. It took me some time to get into the story. And In some of the scenes, I had a bit of trouble figuring out what was going on, and I caught myself re-reading a number of paragraphs where it wasn’t clear to me what was happening or who was saying what.

I also wished Elin had broken up with Nate a lot earlier - no-one deserves to be stuck in such a “relationship.“ But I really liked the frienship and camaraderie between the Bees - and …

To be fair, I’m a sucker for a good fake relationship story (bonus points for “pining for sibling’s best friend for forever“), and Sophie and Connor sure did not disappoint! I’ll admit I had a soft spot for Sophie ever since she proved to be such an awesome friend to Kyla, and I just knew there had to be more to Connor than the ladies' man facade he so successfully hid behind. Sophie was a strong, resourceful shero I could root for from the get-go, and I loved how she and Connor - mostly :) - brought out the best in each other. The rest of the wonderfully messy and meddling found family around Ardinmuir and Lochmara occasionally tried to steal the show, but that’s par for the course for a Kait Nolan book, I think. Like I’ve come to expect from books by Mary Frame, Another Fox Bites the Dust manages to find the perfect balance between dealing with serious issues, a slow-burn romance, and plenty of sweet and funny moments.

The characters are far from perfect, and they manage to mess things up spectacularly before they find their HEA. I loved getting to know Mindy and Luke (and their families) and I enjoyed seeing them fall in like and - inevitably - in love.(Luke is a truly a cinnamon roll of a hero, and I especially loved his interactions with Mindy’s brother Jake.

This book can be read as a standalone, yet there is a lot of backstory as well as an overarching storyline, so it’s probably best to read this series in order.
