Sean Fletcher: Darkness Within (2021, Fletcher, Sean, Sean Fletcher)

(Not only) for fans of the Mages of New York series.

This is a spin-off series, so if you liked Mages of New York, and especially Aspen and Lucien, chances are good you will enjoy this tale of their respective offspring as much as I did.

Especially in the first instalment of the series, Skylar reminds me so much of her mother Aspen, it's sometimes not even funny - except when it is. Asher seems to follow in his father's flashy footsteps into overachieverdom, but - unlike his dad - he isn't larger than life. Yet. ;)
Rounding out our new team of heroes are Mia, Skylar's best friend and understated bada$$, and Colson, who has become one of my favorite characters in this series, not only because he is a good guy, loyal, and kind, but frankly the smartest of the bunch under fire.

Add to that a mysterious, …

More, please!

I LOVE Finley and Knox - and Rae, and Cole(!), and Mariana, and ALL the Kellys (seriously, I would love to meet them all IRL)! Michelle MacQueen has a gift for creating characters that are just so darn loveable, adorable, sometimes (okay, quite often) hilarious, and just so easy to root for.

Always a Bride is such a wonderful start to this new series, and I want to read ALL the stories, pretty please, with sprinkles and shenanigans on top!

Kathryn R. Biel: Whatever It Takes (2023, Biel, Kathryn R.)

An emotional second-chance romance!

Kathryn R. Biel has a knack for creating believable, flawed characters who will totally steal my heart, break it into tiny little pieces, only to put it together again when they finally get that happy end after all that heartache!
Leslie and Josh are no exception - I loved getting to know these two strong people who, despite dealing with a ton of personal baggage, still find their way to love.
I appreciate the author's ability to find a good balance between tackling serious issues and adding enough lighthearted, humorous touches to deliver a tale that is just as heart-wrenching as it is funny and heart-warming. And I hope there will be many more stories around The Edison Theater and the wonderful people who bring it to life!

Dale E Lehman: The Fibonacci Murders (Paperback, 2019, Red Tales)

This story started strong, and with the multiple points of view and the focus on the cops working this case, it reminded me a bit of Ed McBain's 87th Precinct series.
As other reviewers have already pointed out, the ending felt a bit abrupt - personally, I would have liked to learn more about the motive, the specifics of the pattern each of the victims fit. Plus, as has also been pointed out by others, one of the supposedly smartest people we meet in this story does something absolutely stupid - and not even his wife tries to dissuade him from his harebrained scheme?

Overall, I'd rate this story 3.5/5 stars.

That being said, I enjoyed getting to know Peller and his colleagues, and I'd like to read more stories in the series.

Kait Nolan: Don't You Wanna Stay (2021, Take The Leap Publishing)

This lovely, slow-burn romance is a wonderful addition to the series! Deanna and Wyatt are such a great match - even if one of them might need a bit longer to realize that. I loved seeing them grow close and become true partners, not only in a professional sense.

As always, it's a treat to visit with lots of "old friends" (special shout out to Ari!) and meet the heroes and heroines from future books (I sincerely hope that's not just wishful thinking on my part... :D).

Insta-love! Insta-love! :D

I've been waiting for this book ever since reading "Chasing the Sun" - I fell in love with Naomi in book #1, and I was curious to see what kind of hero would prove worthy for this amazing ;) heroine. And while I'm usually not a particularly big fan of insta-love, I'm happy with the way this story played out.

While Hunter may come across as a bit stuffy at first - and yes, "buttish" :D - he's still a fellow word nerd, so I'll cut him some slack. And both Naomi and Hunter have plenty to figure out for themselves, even without adding the potential of romance to the mix, so their initial reluctance to see where this mutual attraction may lead is understandable. But they have a team of wingmen (wing-siblings?) rooting for them, which is equally awesome, awkward, and slightly terrifying. :D

Ginger Li: XOXO, Violet (2022, Manlapig, Leslie)

Funny and sweet - and ALL the warm fuzzies!

Ah, Violet! She was such a great friend to Piper in the first book, and I've been looking forward to reading her story!
She may be nerdy, shy, and the queen of awkward, but she's a wonderful - and funny! - leading lady. I truly loved her inner monologue, plant puns included. :)
And Wes... le sigh le swoon I'll be honest, I've had a soft spot for him since book #1, too.

"His smile sent a hundred warm fuzzies scurrying around in my stomach, but I fought to ignore them."
Just a hundred? Ha! ALL of them!

Both Violet and Wes are brilliant in their own way, and they complement each other so well. They made me smile, and laugh, and swoon (and groan at the more questionable plant puns...).

I can't wait to read the next book!

This might be my favorite in the series yet!

"Cranberry Hill was nice, but Maple Cove was an oddly shaped key that seemed to fit an oddly shaped space in his heart."

I think Matt got that right. The more time I spend in Maple Cove, the more I realize how much I have grown to love the place and its people.
I found both Matt and Rylee to be likeable and relateable characters and easy to root for - if not professionally, in Rylee's case, then definitely for her personally!

4.5/5 quirky and heart-warming stars

5/5 Sharkira stars

Here I thought I couldn't love this series any more than I already did. But Lauren. And Nick. And Sharkira! And the rest of this crazy (born-into or found) family at Juniper Ridge.
Once again, Tawna made me (snort-)laugh and swoon, and she yanked those old heartstrings around a bit, too.

Can't wait for the next book in the series!

None

Funny and punny!

There is so much going on, everyone and their uncle seems to be scheming, there are shenanigans galore, hilarity ensues. To be honest, at times it got a bit confusing and I had some difficulties to keep everyone and everything straight.

But it sure is an entertaining read, it made me smile a lot, sometimes laughing out loud, and it seems obvious that the author had a lot of fun writing this quirky romp.

Susannah Nix: My Cone and Only (Paperback, 2021, Haver Street Press)

None

I fell in love with Andie and Wyatt and have been waiting for their story ever since reading Elementary Romantic Calculus. My expectations were high - and Susannah Nix sure delivered! <3

One of Susannah Nix's (many) strenghts is creating complex, flawed characters that feel real - and that I more often than not can easily root for. In this case, it wasn't olny Andie and Wyatt who stole my heart (although I'll admit that I got a bit frustrated with Wyatt's chickening out and was frankly surprised at how easily Andie forgave him).
But I also loved that Mia and Josh got lots of "page time," and getting to know the King clan and witness their messed-up family dynamics was highly entertaining.

I can't (read: don't want to) wait for the next book in the series!
