A Whirlwind Tour of Women in Economic History

This is a sweeping, whirlwind tour of the role of women in economic activity, starting in prehistory and continuing to the present day. Bateman proceeds chronologically, hopping across the globe in each era to survey prominent/representative examples of women in that region and time period. This provides some great case studies, but the absence of quantitative macro metrics in most sections makes contextualizing these examples challenging. Interestingly the chapters on prehistory and post industrial revolution include by far the most quantitative data, I just wish that was true across the book. Overall there's economic history detail that you won't find elsewhere, and you'll get a great perspective on the changing, gendered nature of work. Highly recommend
