The Structure of Iki

A New Annotated Translation of Kuki Shūzō’s Classic of Japanese Aesthetics

What does it mean to be stylish without being showy, alluring without being crude, detached without being cold?

In The Structure of Iki, Japanese philosopher Kuki Shūzō offers one of the most subtle and original accounts of aesthetic life in modern thought. First published in 1930, this compact classic examines iki: the urbane Edo ideal of refined coquetry, spirited pride, and lucid resignation. Neither mere elegance nor simple beauty, iki names a way of inhabiting tension — between desire and restraint, display and concealment, attachment and freedom.

Rezensionen

A Stimulating Book with Excellent Commentary

This is a great translation of the modern Japanese philosophy classic, with Igarashi providing in-depth notes as well as excellent table-setting throughout the volume. The ideas here are fascinating, with Kuki meticulously analyzing "iki" from a wide variety of perspectives, with the consideration of different line patterns and colors striking me as especially compelling. This is definitely a book that has to be re-read, and it'll help to have background in Japanese history and culture to more deeply appreciate some of the points made here. Highly recommend
