Blurs out the difference between real, surreal, and imaginary

Fiction often presents us with a clear, black-and-white dichotomy between real and imaginary things. Instead, O'Brien offers a gradient, shades of gray. As the plot goes forward, you move along this real-imaginary gradient without fully realizing where you are at the moment.
