A Fascinating Look at a Critical Historical Period

I wasn't familiar with the history of this time period in England, but given how essential it is for understanding North American and economic history I picked this up. I was not disappointed. Healey provides a masterful walkthrough and analysis of this fascinating period, and it's not hard to see how this context impacted both early North American colonial history (both through Puritan migration and the subsequent evolution of that ideology in England) as well as the kernel of ideas that would form the United States governmental system (with the Cromwell era striking me as a kind of proto-Presidency, especially given how it profoundly influenced Hobbes and Locke). I think it also has implications for economic history, as this strange period, where the middling class had direct experience achieving success against the prevailing social order, seems to me a plausible hypothesis for the Industrial Revolution takeoff beginning in the UK. …
